The History of Barton Court Chapter No. 5468
Barton Court Chapter No. 5468 was founded in 1965 to provide a Royal Arch Chapter for Freemasons in the New Milton area. At the time, there were only five Chapters in the surrounding area. With three active Craft Lodges already established in New Milton, it was felt that a more local Chapter was needed to serve the growing community of Freemasons in the district.
Sponsored by Barton Court Lodge No. 5468 and supported by 22 founders, the Chapter received its Charter on 10 February 1965 and was consecrated on 1 April 1965. The consecration ceremony was a significant occasion, attended by 89 Companions, reflecting the strength of interest in establishing a Royal Arch presence in New Milton at the time.
The Chapter has a proud history of fellowship, tradition and service. Its banner was dedicated in 1977, and many of the customs and practices established by its founders continue to play an important part in Chapter life today. Attendance at meetings once regularly reached numbers well beyond what might be expected of a local Chapter, with membership at its peak far exceeding today's typical Lodge size — a testament to how central Freemasonry was to community life in New Milton during those decades.
Barton Court Chapter continues to welcome Royal Arch Masons who wish to enjoy companionship, tradition and the unique experience of Royal Arch Masonry. Whether you are an experienced Companion or new to this fascinating degree, Barton Court Chapter offers a warm welcome and a genuine sense of belonging within the wider Masonic family of New Milton.
Over the years, Barton Court Chapter has met at several venues, including the New Milton Hotel Pavilion, Aldersons Restaurant, the East Close Hotel, the South Lawn Hotel and, more recently, the New Milton Bowling Club. Each move reflects the changing needs of the Chapter over six decades, while its core traditions have remained constant throughout.
Like many Chapters with a long history, Barton Court has seen periods of both growth and quieter times, but its members have remained committed to preserving its ceremonies, its traditions and its sense of camaraderie. The Chapter continues to hold regular Convocations throughout the year, maintaining the rhythm of meetings established by its founders.
Barton Court Chapter continues to welcome Royal Arch Masons who wish to enjoy companionship, tradition and the unique experience of Royal Arch Masonry.
