The History of New Milton Masonic Lodge No 5468

The story of Freemasonry in New Milton began in1934 with the consecration of Barton Court Lodge No.5468. As the town grew, local Freemasons wanted a lodge closer to home, creating a centre for friendship, learning and charitable work within the community.

In 1965, New Milton’s purpose-built Masonic Hall was dedicated, providing the town with one of the largest Masonic temples in the province. The Hall became the home of several Masonic organisations and has remained an important part of local Freemasonry ever since.

In 2025, Barton Court Lodge adopted the name New Milton Lodge No 5468, bringing together members from Barton Court and Fernhill lodges. The new lodge continues the traditions of its predecessors while looking confidently to the future.

As membership increased, Fernhill Lodge No. 7707 was established in 1960. For many years the two lodges worked side by side, supporting one another and sharing a strong tradition of service both locally and across Hampshire.

Like many organisations, both lodges experienced declining membership during the early 2000s. Rather than allow Freemasonry in New Milton to disappear, the members chose to unite and secure its future.

Today, New Milton Lodge meets at the New Milton Centre, where it continues to welcome new members, support local charities, organise community events and uphold the values of

friendship, integrity, respect and service.

The New Milton Centre also welcomes members of the wider community, hosting visiting Lodges and Chapters throughout the year. This spirit of openness reflects the original vision of those who founded Barton Court Lodge back in 1934- a belief that Freemasonry should be accessible , community-focused and built on genuine friendship. As the Lodge looks ahead, it remains committed tp preserving these traditions while continuing to grow and adapt for future generations of Freemasons in New Milton.
